In Russia history has become tool of internal and external politics. It is designed to promote interests of the ruling elite. The real debate has been marginalized. Even the great repressions of the past are manipulated. The victims are commemorated, but there is no word of responsibility. Maria Domańska and Štěpán Černoušek note that there is a need for honest, open discussion about the history, especially in the West, as inside Russia it is impossible, at least for the moment.
